ANGRY BIRDS

Working in conjunction with the developer Rovio, I developed the PC retail packaging for many Angry Birds skus, including the Angry Birds Trilogy, Angry Birds Star Wars and Bad Piggies which were sold in major retailers such as Walmart and Target.

WHAT I'VE LEARNED

In the world of brick and mortar retail, the walls are collapsing. Mega online giants, aka Amazon, are bringing in the wrecking ball. Everything can be bought online, including milk and bananas. At last, as our society shifts towards more global connectivity and so does our appetite for having everything in the cloud including PC games. Steam, an online game retailer, does this very well. For a PC game’s viability in a retail store, it would need to stand out even more than it did before. This global shift to cloud based purchases made it so. I realized that it took more than just good packaging. It took something that looked completely different; it took something to make the buyer turn around and look, even if the market does seem slim, there are still niches out there that crave it. A great example is Nintendo’s excellent repacking and redesign of their once defunct NES and SNES systems. By making these systems smaller, loaded with games that no longer were profitable individually, they were able to pull in earnings on once dead systems. Sure, the market for brick and mortar products is getting cut down, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a profit to be made… somewhere.

the CHALLENGE

Rovio wanted to enter into the PC market with branded packaging. I worked with the design team in Finland, with a large asset folder, to insure the package design would adhere to Angry Bird standards. The result was a handful of different design ideas, with some making it to market.

PACKAGE DESIGN

Working within an asset folder and Rovio’s guidelines, I was more than happy to help layout these pieces of art. The assets were rearranged to fit the amaray box and eventually found themselves on shelves of major retailers.
